This year\u2019s 36<sup>th<\/sup> annual conference takes place in Tulum, Mexico, from October 16 through October 20, with sessions from Thursday through Saturday (the 17<sup>th<\/sup> \u2013 19<sup>th<\/sup>).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/utopian-studies.org\/\">La Sociedad de Estudios Ut\u00f3picos<\/a> es una organizaci\u00f3n acad\u00e9mica interdisciplinaria que se ha reunido anualmente desde su fundaci\u00f3n en 1975. Este a\u00f1o, nuestra conferencia tendr\u00e1 lugar en Tulum, Mexico, desde el 16 de octubre al 20 de octubre, con sesiones de jueves a s\u00e1bado (del 17 al 19 de octubre).<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>In the wake of recent political oppression, we as scholars and activists cannot help but wonder the degree of responsibility individuals and communities have toward what Jose Esteban Mu\u00f1oz calls \u201cthe prison house of the present.\u201d Is disaffection in the wake of traumatic events a form of complicity? Or, on the other hand, does a relentless focus on the present lead to what Munoz calls \u201cdisabling political pessimism\u201d? Anti-colonial struggles around the world, including over culture and ideology, the rise of populism, climate crisis, and the disasters of neoliberalism offer a case in point. Steeping oneself in the discourse of trauma creates conditions for tension, stress, and even illness. Yet absolving oneself of the responsibility to speak up, speak out, or protest because of our physical or emotional proximity to trauma risks defaulting to what Ernst Bloch calls an ahistorical, abstract utopia based in banal optimism. In an abstract utopia, dystopia is elsewhere, in another part of the world beyond our concerns, while utopia is elsewhen, in a future we will never witness.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s conference theme of <strong>elsewhere and elsewhen<\/strong> calls for a provocation of the concept of utopia as simultaneously somewhere and nowhere, a liminal area of possibility and neutrality that exists beyond the saturation of the present. As Louis Marin suggests, elsewhere or elsewhen might be an actual geographic place or mythologized past such as expatriate Paris of the 1920s or Disneyland and its preservation of the 1950s. Alternatively, elsewhere or elsewhen might be a nineteenth-century intentional community in the United States that we try to recreate in the present, or a twenty-first-century queer and trans community that exists at a distance from heteropatriarchy and capitalism. Each scenario hinges on the premise that the appropriate response to disappointment with present circumstances is to not just imagine but also to create a better alternative, with a critical eye toward historical failures.<\/p>\n<p>The conference organizers invite scholarly and creative responses to the conference theme of elsewhere and elsewhen from a variety of academic and non-academic disciplines, including but not limited to scholars in the field of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Latinx and\/or Chicanx studies;<\/li>\n<li>LGBTQ+ studies, especially trans of color and queer of color critique;<\/li>\n<li>Gender and sexuality studies;<\/li>\n<li>Disability studies and\/or medical humanities;<\/li>\n<li>Critical race studies;<\/li>\n<li>Indigenous studies;<\/li>\n<li>Postcolonial studies;<\/li>\n<li>Environmental studies and green utopias;<\/li>\n<li>Literature, film and media, philosophy, history, and the digital humanities;<\/li>\n<li>Critical theory, including but not limited to, political philosophy, affect theory, Marxism, disability theory, queer theory, postcolonial theory, environmental theory or posthumanism and new materialisms; and feminist theory.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Additionally, we welcome proposals from movement\/community activists, artists and musicians, architects and city planners, and members of intentional communities whose work relates to utopian thought and possibility or dystopian realities and visions. Proposals do not have to be narrowly tailored to the conference theme. Non-theme related papers in the field of utopian studies, broadly conceived, are also welcome. We highly encourage bilingual presentations and panels in Spanish at this year\u2019s conference.<\/p>\n<p>Proposals of 250-300 words are accepted for presentations in the following formats:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A 15- to 20-minute individual paper;<\/li>\n<li>A full panel of up to four speakers, or an informal roundtable of 3-6 presenters;<\/li>\n<li>A presentation or performance of a creative work or artifact;<\/li>\n<li>A visual\/audio presentation in the form of a poster and\/or demo.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Sessions will be 75 minutes. <strong>We particularly encourage pre-formed panels\/roundtables comprised of shorter presentations with more allocated time for audience engagement. <\/strong>We ask that pre-formed panels leave at least 15 minutes for interactive discussion\/Q&amp;A.
