THE SOCIETY FOR UTOPIAN STUDIES
\n37th Annual Meeting

Papers are welcome on all aspects of the utopian tradition \u2013 from the earliest utopian visions to the utopian speculations and yearnings of the 21st century, including art, architecture, urban and rural planning, literary utopias, dystopian writings, utopian political activism, theories of utopian spaces and ontologies, music, new media, or intentional communities.<\/p>\n

Please send a 100-250 word abstract by June 1, 2012 to\u00a0lyman.sargent@umsl.edu<\/a>\u00a0(please put \u201csus submission\u201d in the subject line). As you submit your abstract, please indicate if you have any scheduling restrictions, audiovisual needs (overhead projector; data projector, DVD player, audio, Macintosh computer, PC, or slide projector) and software (e.g. PowerPoint, Keynote, a specific web browser). Also say if you need an internet connection, special needs, or a need for a written letter of acceptance of your proposal. Note: All specific audiovisual requests must be included in the original abstract submission. Late requests cannot be fulfilled due to conference organizational deadlines.<\/p>\n

There will be two special sessions on Thursday the 4th before the start of regular programming, which begins at 1:30. The conference ends at 12:30 Sunday the 7th.<\/p>\n

9:00-12:00 \u201cMaster class on Architecture and Utopia\u201d Led by Dr. Nathaniel Coleman, Senior Lecturer in Architecture, University of Newcastle, author of Utopias and Architecture (2005) and editor of Imagining and Making the World (2011). Expressions of interest in participating are invited from younger scholars, including PhD candidates. The Class will consider the on-going problematic of architecture and Utopia, and aims to open up new areas of inquiry into the topic by encouraging debate around it. 12:00-1:30 Seminar for graduate students and young faculty on paper presentation, publishing, and building a career. Led by Gregory Claeys, University of London, and Lyman Tower Sargent, University of Missouri-St. Louis.<\/p>\n

On Friday the 5th there will be a reception at the Merril Collection of Science Fiction, Speculation& \u00a0Fantasy from 6:00-9:00 with tours of the collection.<\/p>\n

Society for Utopian Studies Nicole LaRose Graduate Student Conference Travel Grants
\n<\/strong>There are two or more grants of $500 each with at least one for domestic travel and one for international travel. Please send your paper proposal, budget proposal, and a recent c.v. to the conference program chair Lyman Tower Sargent (lyman.sargent@umsl.edu<\/a>) by June 1, 2012. On the budget proposal, please list other resources you have available from your home institution, research grants, or other sources. Selection criteria include:<\/p>\n

1) The quality of the paper proposal\/abstract, with attention to its contribution to utopian studies 2) The soundness of the proposed budget 3) A demonstrated commitment to the society, as evidenced by repeat attendance and participation in the life of the society.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
